Clearing out the Stuff

Posted February 24th, 2008 by Judi

I woke up to the smell of the coffee that Duane had brought to me (I’m very spoiled!) and had a few sips while I thought of what I wanted to do with my day. I definitely wanted to get some more done on the kids rooms. We are in the midst of a major bedroom overhaul in preparation for renting the rooms as a B&B. The past week I had a friend/handyman helping me to change out some ceiling fans and repaint a few walls where posters had been taped up or walls had been patched.

It was so satisfying pulling all of the tape from posters off the walls and cleaning Michael’s room and bathroom from top to bottom. The last thing I had to do before finishing that room was to clean out the closet and sort out the clothes that he didn’t take to college. I have to say that his closet was smelling a bit like a goat. So after I had my coffee I got to work in there, emptied his closet and now it is fresh, fresh, fresh!

Later in the afternoon Duane and I had a private Tango lesson with Lynda and Rick Wilson across town and afterwards Duane was so sweet to humor me and stop at TJ Max in Buckhead near 400 so I could get new bedding for Michael’s room. We found a great white coverlet and bedskirt, two lime green European sized pillow covers and a cute little throw with blue and lime green flower design. I went over to e Bath and Beyond before I caught it since they are right there in the same shopping area.I wanted to make sure there wasn’t something better. It was not good at all. Everything was way more expensive and I liked the simplicity of the things we picked out at TJ Max much better. The great thing was that all of that cost a total of $110.00. Beat Bed Bath and Beyond hands down. We got the new linens home and put them on the bed and it looks so good in there. The thing is now the catwalk outside his room is piled with junk and bins of clothes.

It is most likely going to get worse since, I am starting on Amanda’s room tomorrow. I will have to clean out her closets and drawers too. I recently put some Heywood Wakefield furniture in her room that I had for staging my properties, and it looks really nice. Now that room just needs some repainting to give it an updated look and some new bedding. I told Amanda of my plans to do the B&B and she was a little wistful that her room would not be left as a shrine waiting for her to come home to. I can understand that feeling. Its hard to leave home. But she is in Rio de Janeiro for Petes sake! I told her when she comes home, I will put her things back in there just like they were. I know she will like room even better with the changes.

All this cleaning and reorganizing has generated a lot of stuff that I now need to move down to the garage. We are getting ready to have a big garage sale this spring and I can’t wait to clear out the things that I don’t need or want. I saw a great little video where George Carlin is talking about Stuff. I have to admit that yes I have way too much Stuff.
