How to Design Studio Space

When I design a space, I start with a concept based on what the space is and what the owner wants. After getting a little idea of the direction of the design, I need to find that perfect piece to build the design around.

My sister Mary, bought a building several months ago for her studio and now that the tenants moved out Mary is ready to get her business moved in.

The building is a rather nondescript warehouse space that was built in the sixties, but is somehow cool. While Grant and I were doing the Danneman’s build out and design, he kept talking about wanting to do a primitive and modern shop. That stuck with me and so that is kind of what I had in mind for Mary’s space.

Mary designs and makes children’s clothing from wool sweaters that she gets at thrift stores and then felts. She has overgrown her space in her home and really needs to expand and have a separate studio. So with a general idea in mind, I headed to the John Scott Antique Market, held on the second weekend of each month. I drove up, paid my five bucks and parked. I walked towards the building and there in a booth out in front of the market, with arrows of light pointing at it from heaven was a 16 foot wide, seven foot tall primitive store display cabinet. I knew in a second that this was it. We had to have it.

That was the easy part. Since it was a big ticket item, I then spent the next five hours trying to get Mary or her husband John on the phone to get one of them to come over to see it and sign off on the purchase. As you can see they loved it and Jerry from Arkansas, loaded it up in his gigunda trailer and delivered it. what a great start. The space is going to be fantastic.
