Rainy Day Kitchen Design Shopping

Posted August 25th, 2008 by Judi

Busy rainy day. I had to go to Ikea to pick up a few more cabinet knobs for Maureen’s kitchen, which BTW, is almost finished ( pictures to come soon). While I was there, I checked out their farm sinks to possibly go in a fun cottage kitchen that I am doing in Inman Park. This sink is the cats pajamas, in both looks and price. Have you noticed that it doesn’t usually happen like that? Whatever looks good, even if it is the simpler thing, is usually more expensive. But not the Ikea Domsjo Farm Sink It is 36″ wide with double basins maybe 8 or 9″ deep and the flat drain part behind the sink is fluted. It looks fabulous and it is a bargain at $299.00. They also have a 24″ farm sink but it doesn’t have that great fluted part.

There are a lot of people who love that Domsjo sink. Chris Lethbridge blogged about his Ikea farm sink installation,

Yes it is an IKEA apron-fronted sink. I am ashamed to say that no longer because, for all the sins of Satan’s favorite furniture supplier, this sink rocks. If this was a bad American movie and I was standing in a crowded room saying that, someone in the room would start a slow clap and then stand up slowly off their chair, causing someone else a few feet away to clap and stand and so and so forth. I might be seen to stand there, proud and, yes, defiant, with perchance a small tear at the corner of my eye as I gaze firmly into my IKEA sink-ed future. . .

I spent thirty minutes of my day driving up and down the access roads off I-85 OTP This morning looking for Diversified Cabinet Distributors. I can never find that pesky place. I guess I don’t frequent the establishment enough to remember how the hell I got there before, but after two phone calls I got there and worked with Sharon Pauly to pick out the style and type of cabinets needed for the Inman Park job. I ended up getting a bid for the Island from a separate supplier, Shilo, than the regular cabinets. The colored cabinets were harder to find except in the more custom cabinet lines and I wanted to use red antiqued beadboard style cabinet for the Island and put a zinc countertop on it. Shilo has a door called the Beaded Century with flat front drawers in distressed red so we are pricing the Island cabinets with that company. In order to save some money, I also asked Sharon to price the Hadley door style in antique biscotti with taupe glaze from the less expensive Merrilat Masterpiece Series for all the rest of the cabinets.

Most of the cabinet companies have a cream glazed selection, so to hedge my bet, I also went over to the Home Depot at Sidney Marcus to check out the Premier Cabinet line they have displayed there. Premier is owned by KraftMaid and I have used them before in the original Wigwam kitchen. I had them price the Premier Freeport Maple door in a fawn glaze for all of the regular cabinets for a comparison. So we’ll see what the prices come in as and what looks the best in a day or two.
I love this stage of a design job but I do get obsessed until it comes together. It’s like the idea is loosely formed in my mind and then I have to find the parts and pieces to pull it together. Once I can get the whole design in my head, then I can relax and let it unfold. It is totally satisfying to see what has been in my imagination come to fruition. Grant talks about how he likes to create vignettes and then once he has done it he can just leave it. Design for me is the same kind of thing so I understand that since I love the creation of these different settings and then once I do, I also find that I am emotionally done with it.
