A Whirlwind of a Political Season

The fact that Obama was actually elected President of the United States is just incredible. It is so nice to finally be working on the side that won. What a great feeling. I could not believe when the moron sheep of this Nation voted for George Bush – a second time.

I have been impressed with Obama from the time that I read his first book about his father. That was a couple of years before he ran for President. I liked him but I came to respect and admire him more and more over time. During this campaign McCain showed himself to be an erratic, opportunist who did not have a clue about what American’s wanted or needed from a President. Choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate and then acting so bizarrely with the economic crisis, wheh…not very presidential. I was appalled. No way could we let them win. Whereas Obama has been steller. He ran a great campaign. it was impeccable.

From Friday October 31 to November 4, I had a front row seat to the get Obama elected volunteer efforts. I  donated our loft space on Krog street to be a count down staging area for three Intown polling stations. It was quite a scene but so much fun to feel like we were really making a difference in getting people to get to the polls.

The next day after the election when the hangovers abated, everyone just moved on over to work on the Martin campaign. And we have been working our buns off to get him elected. Swarms of people from all over the country have come to Georgia to help.  The group of people that have been working over at Krog Street with Dene Shepherd decided to do a fundraiser party that turned into an all day canvassing and fundraiser here at Krog Street today.

Lots of people came to canvas. They would show up, sign in, get their marching orders, then go out with their lists door to door, person to person. Then, they would come back, report in, get another list and go out again.  I was here all afternoon, holding down the fort and getting the place ready for a barbecue and bluegrass party from 4-6. We had barbecue donated from the Highland Bakery,  I made organic field raised hamburgers from the half of a cow I have in my freezer, and various other food, beer and and wine were donated. We were having a little trouble finding a band on such short notice so I asked a dance friend of mine if his band could play for the party and and got an enthusiastic, “Yes, we’d be delighted to”. So Zach Harrison’s band, The Wild, played some groovy tunes and a great time was held by all.

Not only did we canvas and party but we made over 3,000 dollars for the Martin campaign. To top off the day, Dene Shepherd, our field organizer, got Duane and I on the list for the Martin and Al Gore event that followed our party. So Duane and I left Krog Street and went across town to see Al Gore. It was very exciting, Al Gore had the room going strong. And then when he finished speaking I got to shake his hand. First Clinton, then Gore. All in one week! Amazing.

I was amazed all over again when we got back to the house. The band was gone, the food was put away, the kitchen was spotless and my friend Robyn was cleaning out my cabinets. Well just one cabinet. That’s a  damn good friend. It was a good party and a good night.
