Meet Eileen

Posted August 3rd, 2008 by Judi

eileen-002-2This was one of my better finds. Sam Crawford was moving his video production studio, Mamarama, from 130 Krog Street to LA last month. I bought a couple of big items from him for Mary’s studio while he was moving out. When I came to get my things from his office, Sam pulled out a large box and gave it to me and said you can have this wooden model, I have never put even put her together. He said, your sister can have her if whenever she sees her she sends good thoughts to my for my company.

Friday afternoon when I went to the Felted Heart studio, Mark, Mary and Sean had put her together as a surprise for me. It made me smile. Mary’s husband, John, named her Eileen because she does.

Mark Needelman, The Art of Construction

Posted August 3rd, 2008 by Judi

blog-075Mark Needelman is an artist first and a construction person only by happenstance since he really is an artist in everything he does and he one of those people who can do anything ( welds, sews, makes airplanes, fixes cars, does concrete sculptures, dances, does CPR on people choking in restaurants, listens carefully). I have had the pleasure of working with him on Mary Sweeney’s Felted Heart studio. It was a dumpy little cinderblock cave and together we transformed it into a wonderful work space in the 658 Studios on Angier Avenue.

Colour Lover

I found a really fun and addicting website yesterday, www.colourlovers.com. It is a site where you can play around with different palettes of colors and then create patterns based on those palettes. It will then give you all of the html (or other color identification systems) labels for each of the colors so that you can use them elsewhere.

I would really recommend that you not go to this site until after all your bills are paid. If you don’t you may never get back to them,

said a voice of experience.

Extreme Bathroom Makeover

after-bathroom

The bathroom in Mary’s space was just awful. Someone had built very shabby walls and painted the mural on them and it just gave me the creeps to go in there. So we had to do an overhaul. Mark took out the sink and cabinet. We Freecycled it and someone came and took it within an hour. We were going to remove the little wing wall but it was full of pipes so Mark built it back, patched up the walls where needed and trimmed the space out a little better. It was still horrible, so I got in there with the primer. It took three coats of primer and two coats of paint to cover that mess. But at least was then had a clean blank slate.

Making a Custom Drum Lamp Shade

I bought some fabric that I loved from Forsyth a few months ago and it came in handy the other day for Mary’s Felted Heart space in the Studio 658 building. She needed a light fixture to hang above her seating area. We looked for a great big drum light but the ones we found were all quite expensive.

Mid-Century Doors to my Heart

Just found a terrific website for a terrific company, Crestview Doors that specializes in making doors for mid-century homes. Love It, Love it! They are located in Austin, Texas. Their website showcases a lot of mid-century design, including a picture of my living room at 130 Krog Street (so you see, I know they have great taste).

Let There Be Light!

Posted July 14th, 2008 by Judi

blog-005We finally have the beginnings of a Window in Mary’s Felted Heart studio to be. Mark has been working on installing these metal windows for the past few days and he finally got to the point of knocking the block out for one of them and installing that window. He will do the other one tomorrow. What a difference it makes to have light in the main room. I have felt like I’m working in a cave.
