Danneman’s again

What once was old is new again. Joe Stewardson and partner Kate Pedrick will soon be opening Danneman’s Coffee in the Old Fourth Ward, in the building at the corner of Edgewood and Boulevard, that for years housed DANNEMAN’S Super Market and more recently Javaology. About five years ago Stewardson bought the abandoned building from the Danneman family and restored it and leased the corner space in the building to his first tenant, the Javaology coffee shop .

Everyone in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood was excited about the coffee shop and the revitalization that the shop brought to the Edgewood retail corridor and the Martin Luther King Landmark District.
It seems that after a year of good business, Javaology started to show some signs of management problems which alienated their customers (they for sure alienated me, for example. I never went back). This ultimately led to them closing their doors in March of this year. Their timing was unfortunate since the corner of Edgewood and Boulevard was really coming alive with the recent addition of two new businesses, the Corner Tavern and Café Circa, right next door to Javaology, in the remaining space of what was the old Market.

With a sense of commitment to the neighborhood, Stewardson decided to keep the corner a coffee shop. He has teamed up with Kate Pedrik who has a long coffee history as a local barista and coffee shop owner to create a new shop, infusing it with the fundamental spirit of the original Danneman’s market and keeping the funky meet and greet aspect of this neighborhood icon.edgewood-at-boulevard-2004

The new Danneman’s is being designed by me and Grant Henry. We want to recreate the historical aspect of the building that was evident at the heyday of Auburn and Edgewood Avenues. A warm welcoming vibe will permeate throughout Danneman’s to enhance interaction and connection between patrons, new and old. The downstairs space features original exposed brick, refurbished vintage windows, wooden plank floors, and inviting vintage furnishings.

There is also 2,500 square feet upstairs with exposed brick walls, lots of windows and beautiful wood floors. The new owners want this space to be used to work, to dance or to hold a meeting. An outside patio will allow the alfresco coffee break. Every part of Danneman’s will exude a comfortable casualness that will welcome friends and neighbors to spend some time here, drink some coffee and eat some lunch!

Good quality coffee and basic food at moderate prices in a great location, providing a comfortable setting with good design, will make Danneman’s Coffee Market a neighborhood institution once again. Get your gossip and hot coffee here!

I am here to say that DANNEMAN’S Coffee in the Old Fourth Ward is going to be the rockin’est coffee shop in the south! The energy of the people, the unexpected bend of the decor, the spaciousness and variety of uses it will offer, and their commitment to community, will all combine to make everyone want to be there now!!!

I am more than excited about seeing how it comes together, and hope that all of judi-kay’s friends and fans will join us there to watch our collective lives change as a result of the magical spirits of all those involved!!!

Sister Lousia says: “Can I get an Amen!” balanced by “that Joe is one Hard-Ass Mutha-Fuckah!”

    See ya’ll there!!!
