Tango Junkies on Valentines Day

Posted February 15th, 2008 by Judi

Duane and I met because of dancing. We both liked many different dances. My first dance love was Zydeco, Duane was more a Lindy Hopper. Along the way we also branched out taking lessons in West Coast Swing, Hustle and Blues. In the summer of 2007, we began to take Tango lessons and thus began our addictive adventure.

We are now taking two and a half hour group lessons per week as well as some individual lessons and dancing at Milongas one or two nights per week. We are hell bent on passing through that beginning awkward stage. The beginner thing is especially difficult in Tango since at a Milonga ( tango Dance Party) the norm is to dance for three songs with the same person. That means if you are dancing with someone that is a lot better than you are, it is a lot to put them though and actually a lot of pressure on you – the beginning dancer. So Duane and I are determined to improve and we have.

Recently we took a beginning immersion class from Rick and Linda Wilson (one can’t get enough of the basics) and afterwards we were talking to our friend Eric , who started this journey at the same time as we did, and we all were so amazed to realize just how far we have come. It was a really good feeling not to be the beginners and to be able to help the newbies along. “Just stick with it you will get it, we were just there not that long ago”.

We really knew we were bitten by the Tango bug when we spent our Valentine’s Day evening at Tango class. It was very sweet because class consisted mainly of the die hards who are our favorite dancers. We all had a great time with lots of individual attention. I couldn’t think of a more romantic way to spend valentine’s day with my honey.

If you want to know where to go to dance Tango in AtlantaThere is a Yahoo group Tango_Ga where you can find a list of events and dance instruction. But don’t say I didn’t warn you!
