The Makings of a Great Day

Posted May 26th, 2008 by Judi

I am so lucky to work for myself and not have to commute, punch a clock or wear panty hose. In fact, I have been my own boss since 1985. There was one stretch in there from 1990 to 2000 when I ran a software company. That was kind of like working for someone else because I had to be there all of the time to manage my employees.

Anyway I love days like this where I am able to be creative and out and about. First off, I stopped in to see Joe and Kate in what is going to be called (definitely maybe) Danneman’s Coffee in the Old Fourth Ward in the space where Javaology was. They are cleaning out and getting things ready to open in 3-4 weeks. When I was there yesterday so many people were stopping asking questions that I made some opening soon signs for them to post.

Then I was off to Decatur where I spent a couple of hours with an old friend, Maureen and her son Mathew. I got the job of helping them to design and remodel their kitchen which is going to be a lot of fun. I love being able to help people to see possibilities in space and then having it come to fruition.

Along those lines I took my trusty little Cannon Powershot and went scouting for ideas and items, for the new coffee shop, at Victory Vintage in Decatur. While visiting with Lee at Victory Vintage she turned me onto the 5th Earl Market. Being starving to death, it was very conveniently located two doors down her shop on South College. The sandwiches looked great but since I don’t eat bread, I ordered a wonderful Greek salad with grilled chicken and it was yum, yum, delicious.

When I got back to Inman Park I made a beeline for City Issue. It was a good thing to because Jennifer Sams just happened to have a grocery hand basket from the actual Danneman’s Market with their name on it. I bought it as a surprise for Joe and I can blog about it since he doesn’t really read my blog, except sometimes, when I make him or occasionally to check out that I haven’t spilled his secrets.

Lee as partners with Jennifer at City Issue several years back when it was in Buckhead and then Lee opened Victory Vintage in Decatur. I am sorry that their partnership didn’t last but I am glad that we now have two really great stores for vintage stuff. Ordinarily I would also go check out the John Scott Flea Market which is on Jonesboro Road off of 285. The thing is, it is only held on the second weekend of the month. They have a second building on the South side of 285 that has architectural antiques and oddities that might be useful for the coffee shop project. But if Joe and Kate are really going to open in a few weeks they need to get on it now.

Oh wait there is more, Then I stopped off at Parish to have a skinny latte and take some photos of their awesome coffee shop area. It is so wonderful. I love how they used found objects and gave the shop such a welcoming feel. In fact, I met a couple of their employees while I was there. Jeff who served my latte is going to come look at the Wigwam Annex. He really needs to buy rather than rent. And then Chris who was doing some work at the big communal table and we talked for about 30 minutes about things we were up to. Among various hats he wears there, Chris puts on wine tastings at One Midtown Kitchen, one of Parish’s sister restaurants.

When I got home it started to pour down rain and I put on Pandora radio typing in Jose Gonzales and it has been playing the best kind of Indie acoustic music while I write this. Very nice. Very nice Indeed.
